This non-fiction book by Gerald Durrell a naturalist beginning at an early age, is an interesting tale of his animal collecting adventures in several different locations in South American Argentina. He has written of his rewarding experiences with both humans and animals during his adventures. He has such a bonding with some of his animals that he not only gives them human names but he sees and relates human like characteristics in his animals. The book reads like a documentary. His travels and experiences are very interesting.
I love Durrels evocative writing. You feel that you are right by his side in these wonderful descriptive stories. Add to that his great sense of humor, and you have the perfect vacation in your hand. A perfect get away gift for your self or a friend. These also make great books for tweens, opening up the huge natural and word of conservation
I’f you’re a Durrell fan, you’ll love this book. In keeping with his other works, Durrell is witty, engaging, and insightful. His love for all creatures small to large shines through. However, do not judge him by today’s animal rights standards; he was a leader of rights in his time, rights that are more advanced now. He would fully support the “new†realities.
This book written by Gerry of the PBS series The Durrells Of Corfu was a delightful recounting of his travels to Argentina to collect animals for his private conservation zoo. The writing was so descriptive of the landscape,the animals which were collected and the wonderful, fascinating people he met and who helped him collect all the animals. I am now going to read the rest of his books. I cannot believe that I had not read any of his books before.
Some of his descriptions were amusing but I was so put off by his capturing of animals to take back to his “zoo†in such a breezy and offhand way I was sickened. I could not finish this book; I don’t believe in taking animals away from their natural habitats for fun and/or profit.
A charming little book about an animal collecting trip in South America. Durrell paints both an enchanting picture both of the Argentine people and of the flora and fauna of the country. He encounters vampire bats, a puma, and many birds. He rescues an ocelot from a cruel local owner who is starving the cat and convinces a baby Geoffrey's cat to eat by pairing it with a lovable tabby kitten who sets the example and provides it with company.Durrell was one of the first naturalists to develop the notion of captive breeding to ensure the survival of endangered species. He obviously cares deeply about the animals that he collects and goes to extra ordinary lengths to make them happy and keep them healthy. His descriptions of caring for a sick taper, even sleeping beside her to comfort her, are delightful. His wrangle with custom's officials are amusing, and his description of a plain trip in Argentina is particularly hilarious.Also, Durrell's tireless work and observations were sometimes the first and best studies into how to care for these animals in captivity. When possible, he takes his specimens from private owners, rather than taking them from the wild. People like Durrell were not responsible for the endangerment of these animals. He worked for the salvation of many species and was probably responsible for the continued survival of some today.
I've always been a fan of Gerald Durrell. I love his writing.
I love all books by Gerald Durrell. I have read nearly all of them. He brings the world of animals to a reality few authors do.
