I have read all of the Silver Foxes series, so it's hard to imagine this as a stand alone book, but I think the author has done all that she could to bring the new reader up to date with the important points from previous books. But my suggestion is to get all of the series ,if you have not yet, and read them all. Its a fantastic series. Now, as for this particular book, it is dark, and it has more violence than I am usually comfortable with, but it's not gratuitous violence. It's there because this is a dark story, ultimately about the fight of good and evil. The main reason I love this author's longer books is that she does a great job of character development, and the characters' foibles and weaknesses are always what drives the story. We don't need external plot devices to keep the characters apart. Poor Gatwick does a pretty good job of that on his own. Angelica is not having any of that, though, and it doesn't take long for her to knock down his defenses. The rest of the book is the tale of one of the nastiest pieces of work to be written getting his just desserts. This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it.
What a fantastic story of self judgment and loathing . Lord Gatwiick had set fir himself a life of oentance for the actions of Lord Shayles. Little did he know that a beautiful Angel raise by his great Uncles Miles had been raised groomed and willed to be his wife. Angelica...is everything. And an angel to boot. Another great read from Ms Farmer!!!!!!
Lord Mark Pearson, the Earl of Gatwick, has been known for years as the best friend of notorious villain Lord Theodore Shayles. For the past 25 years Mark has found himself under Shayles' thumb and not known how to escape. Now he's finally executed revenge on Shayles for a nightmarish event Shayles perpetrated over 20 years ago and which still haunts Mark. He hopes to finally attain the peace he's longed for his entire life with Shayles now imprisoned but with him threatening Mark's life upon his release, any peace seems likely to be short-lived.Growing up in New Orleans as the daughter of a white woman and a black man, Angelica is no stranger to challenges. But even she is shocked to learn that in order to receive her inheritance from her adopted grandfather, one that will save her from penury, she must go to England and marry his great nephew, whom she's never met. Angelica has learned to be wary of men, but she is stronger than most women and determined never to be helpless again. She will put her fears aside and focus on the future, which means persuading Mark to marry her.Mark has barely even looked at a woman in nearly 25 years so he's shocked and rather appalled by his body's reaction to Angelica, but he's also pleasantly surprised when she notices his art and doesn't see him as Shayles' lackey. He doesn't want a wife but agrees to marry her in order to keep his home as per the stipulations of his great uncle's will.Angelica immediately recognizes that something is dreadfully wrong with Mark and is amazed by her genuine curiosity about him. When Shayles learns about Angelica, he threatens her in addition to his threats on Mark's life and Mark must quickly find a way to leave his fears behind in order to protect the woman he's rapidly fallen in love with.Mark was a very different sort of hero. He got caught up in the wrong crowd at a young age when he was vulnerable after his father's death and could never quite escape. He was much older an more vulnerable than the usual in this genre and Angelica was much stronger than is typical. It is she who brings Mark out of himself a bit and he begins to be overwhelmed by emotions. He's what I would normally consider to be a weak hero and yet I liked him. We have a truly insane and quite formidable villain here, who could've been handled better by the hero, but the fact that our heroine is the first one willing to fight in defense of the hero makes this a unique story as well. The heroine essentially helps the hero become a man again and gives him a reason to fight. The feelings between these two developed quite quickly, but it was believable still, especially given Mark's lack of affection in his life and Angelica's determination. I think the ending could've been a bit better in terms of some redemption for Mark, but it was still satisfying overall and an enjoyable read.I voluntarily read a reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I adored the tough, physically fit, Angelica, a woman who vowed never again to feel like a victim. Her moxie and bold attitude and patience, understanding, and seeming to know the correct thing to say kept her so likable all the way through. Mark Pearson, the Earl of Gatwick, has been Shayles's lackey for about 25 years. He followed him around and seemingly supported the villians' treachery for so long. Then, his witnessing paid off for the opposition when he declared Shayles guilty at his hearing in the House of Lords. Surprisingly, that turned the tide and other voted that way too, convicting Shayles. Sentenced to six months, Shayles vowed to kill Gatwick, who went off and isolated himself at his home in the country....that is until Angelica showed up. Then the adventure began. I appreciated the unveiling of the truth behind Mark's story and his weakness. He never did the horrible things, but guilt plagued him at not stopping them. Angelica, and even Shayles himself, and an unexpected source or two may have put him in a different light than he saw himself. He grew to appreciate having a new friend, Angelica, and grew protective of her. Funny situation, serious missions, and budding love too. What is not to like. No cliff hanger either! Great overall.
Mark just stole my heart right from the start. He's been dealt such a horrible hand, but he's maintained his integrity - despite the cost - far longer than anyone could have asked of him. His nemesis has been publicly exposed, but not yet completely vanquished. Angelica shows up out of the blue, sent from his late great-uncle Miles and proving to be just the ally he needs to heal his heart and summon the strength to finish what needs finishing.Angelica has been victimized before, and she's not about to stand by and let herself - or Mark - be trampled on again. In order to secure her inheritance from Miles she has to marry Mark - a task that seems to be beyond what Mark is capable of, but his history proves to be no obstacle to our determined heroine.Their marriage sets the stage for some very intense love scenes, but it's not what you'd expect, not at first anyway. There's a lot of deep-rooted emotional baggage that must be unpacked before the marriage can bear fruit. The journey this book traverses is gut-wrenching, cathartic, and utterly romantic. It's a journey well worth taking, and it ends in a triumphant and sweetly satisfying HEA. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
