There are two books that I recommend every single person to read before dating and every couple to read. One being the Passion Trap by Dean C. Delis and the other being this book. Both I have purchased multiple times. The help this book offers is worth every penny. It sheds a whole new light on communication. In fact if you were considering couples therapy, neither of you would need it if you both followed the suggestions in this book. I bought it because I was dating a very insecure person who made wild assumptions due to bad communication in his past relationships. This helped quite a bit.
As a Marriage and Family Therapy graduate student, it concerns me that so many people are reading this. While some of the techniques he mentions are used by trained therapists to teach their clients, he makes claims that could lead to false hope; for example, never arguing again and fixing all of their issues in three sessions or less. I noticed many times when he would mention methods to use that "he" created, when in fact he changed the name of the actual technique and claimed it as his own. Please find a different book. Anyone who claims they are a therapist would never suggest someone to do these things without their partner knowing, because that creates secrecy and manipulation. I could also not find any sort of credentials even though he claims to be a "psychotherapist." I'm glad I used this book for a book review assignment, because I will be informing many people not to even give it the time of day.

Too soon to tell if we can turn the corner, but the hostilities have ceased. We are softer with each other now. We can communicate for the first time ... maybe ever.Once you learn to let your partner speak his/her truth without interpretation, without argument, without judgement....Once you learn to speak from your own vulnerability rather than grasping, demanding, manipulating, pressuring...Miracles will happen.It works even if only one of you reads this book. Really.
i was literally on the way to divorce court the morning I ordered this book. We decided to make one last ditch effort and try better communication skills. After thousands of wasted dollars in counseling, this little book was the key to hope. It offers very clear and concise advice in a brilliant and insightful manner.
An easy "read" and lots of ideas to improve communication when things may be getting "stale" or you just want some new ideas. Communication is key to any relationship and this shall help with getting things "started" and keep you on the path to openness and maintaining the idea of why you fell "in love" in the first place. It helps guys to "get it" and helps gals to "say it softly".
Excellent advice presented in a very easy to understand way... there is a lot in the relatively Short book. I will certainly use the reminders at the end of the book.I started taking notes, decided to go back later and finish with them. It was nice to find the remaining notes were all summarized in the end.
This book is excellent. Although I found the techniques challenging to implement. If one can commit to using these principles, they will go a long way to offering a better relationship with your partner.
I cannot say enough good things about this book. Such simple techniques that have such a huge effect. He explains why conflict starts to begin with, and offers practical, real tools to diffuse it (or avoid it to begin with). If you or your spouse tend to play the blame game when you have conflict, then this book is an absolute must read. It has changed how I think, and I feel I can actually put his advice to use, making a difference in my communication skills.
