...they often fail to capture the unique gestalt of the American people. This book is rife with such failures. Whether it's the authors failing to understand the basics of how the US presidency would function in an emergency, or failing to understand that America's (sad) obsession with guns doesn't mean that there are millions of us ready on a microsecond's notice to start beating people up and looting stores , or even failing to note that in America, there would be cookies in the cupboard, not biscuits...the result is a book about Londoners who experience the end of the world, but are somehow magically inserted into Chicago. It just doesn't work that way. That, plus a plot device that makes zero sense (coronal mass ejections don't "build up" over time; they simply arrive) and the worn-out "must find my family, because family is everything" meme, results in kind of a dead book. You know how this ends - or doesn't end, because these authors are likely to try to spin this one out for 8 or 12 volumes, sucking the marrow out of bones that have long since been emptied.

I have read a lot of CME novels in the past few years. This one is right at the top of my favorites. The reason is that there are numerous locations the novel focuses on....Chicago, South Park, DC and even in Antarctica, a research facility. For me, it focuses on the love of family and the power of familial bonds. Len is attempting to reach his young son, James and his ex, Amy who is South Park. Neither Len or Jen has an easy time following the coronalejection and the world as we know it is in shambles.Lots of different characters and their situations are covered so hopefully in the next ones the reader will be able to see how they are doing...General Shepherd in DC and Dixon as well. Also, Freddie and Jen and their journey across Lake Michigan with their new passenger. And, of course Len and his trek with his new buddy...There is absolute mayhem on the streets of Chicago and with little to no warning, society starts to break down quickly. Even in South Park, there is chaos. I think Amy's words of 'don't look back' spoken to herself were spot on. My goodness, what she experienced there was horrific but things get even worse later for her. James is 8 years old and intelligent beyond his years.Poor Len has to learn to finally stand up for himself after years of not doing so. He does have to question whether or not there is any hope left in the world ...and rightly so.Found it to be well-written and looking forward to the next part...which I have already ordered. Lots of action, and more adventures coming up...Most highly recommended.

Book gets straight to the action, but it's just not very believable. One second things are fine, seems like 2 seconds later and all the cars have crashed, Chicago has burned down, the gas lines have exploded, and most people are dead. Huh. That was some seriously quick anarchy. When the cars started heating up and exploding one after the other I gave up. Pretty tough to get a car to explode. Even if you catch them on fire they usually just burn. This book is Hollywood. No thanks. I like a believable story.

Pretty much what could happen if the Sun sends us a load of "bad stuff" that produces a massive EMP. Fires, searing heat, burning cities, a really massive disaster.

This book is a great start to what has potential to be be a great series. The characters are believable and are already beginning to grow.

Loved this book. It is refreshingly different for a post apocalyptic book. Finally, we get to follow a non prepper through survival. Can’t wait to read the next book.

I've read everything this author has published and they've all been great. This book differs in that our protagonist is a man who has no concept of survival in a post-apocalyptic environment. Can he survive long enough to find his ex-wife and his son? Not without some help which he finds in a reclusive neighbor.Exciting, action-filled and suspenseful, this episode has everything. You won't be disappointed.

This is a decent starting book though quite short. There are not a lot of writing errors which is nice. It took a bit, but I finally started to like Len. He was unprepared etc, but determined (and lucky rather than smart). The plot line of the estranged guy needing to find his far away family has been done a lot and it is not especially well-done here, at least not enough to stand out. From a science point of view, I don't see how a CME (which doesn't build up, it just happens), would cause so many devices to melt and or explode. Law and order in the small community of South Haven seemed to fall apart very, very fast, even though a lot of people clearly didn't know what was happening. I also didn't really understand the side story of the doctors and of the research time in Antarctica, as they did not add anything to the main plot. Perhaps in the future those stories will converge?
