This detailed yet eminently readable book is a wonderful introduction to Kalachakra practice. I'm very impressed with the authors' ability to express mind-expanding concepts from the Kalachakra tradition in clear, easily comprehensible English.This book also contains a fascinating, detailed overview of Jonang history in Tibet. The Jonangpas are the one major Tibetan Buddhist tradition least well known in the West and, to my tastes at least, the most interesting. Their emphasis on understanding reality in light of advanced spiritual practice rather than on intensive scholarship makes their views particularly compelling.My one wish was that the author had added an additional chapter explaining the Jonang Zhentong view in more depth. The focus here, however, is on Kalachakra, and this material is both illuminating and incredibly inspiring.
This book is an exploration of the key figures in Shambhala's history and the Jonang Kalachakra lineage. I would think any Kalachakra practitioner would really enjoy the first part of the book, especially the history of the Kings of Shambhala. The remainder of the book is an exploration of the key figures involved with the Jonang lineage and spread of the Shentong view of Emptiness. It is shocking how few people (myself included) were unaware of the Jonang tradition, especially considering they played such a key role in Kalachakra's history in Tibet. Even if someone is not connected to the Jonang tradition, it is still interesting to read about the history. Khentrul Rinpoche weaves in masters from other schools of Buddhism into the story with great respect.There are a lot of Tibetan names involved, and the book is a tad difficult to get through at times because of that, but it is necessary as a record and part of this history. This book is a gift to all who practice Kalachakra, Jonang line or not... and invaluable for anyone practicing in the Jonang tradition, or someone who is interested in the history of the history of Tibetan Buddhism. The Rangtong-Shentong are really only discussed through the figures who propagated their views, not an exploration of the views themselves, which makes sense considering that is not the focus of this book.I plan on keeping this book and look forward to rereading it -- especially my favorite parts: the descriptoin of Shambhala and it's kings. There is no doubt Khentrul Rinpoche derives great joy from spreading the Kalachakra teachings, and that he is one of today's great teachers of Kalachakra.
