I absolutely loved this book. The story is full of hilarious moments with quirky characters that draw you in and won't let you go. Reed is a single dad who needs to learn how to trust his heart again. Callie is a writer looking for real life experiences to bring authenticity to her books. You will find yourself rooting for Reed and Callie from chapter one. I couldn't put it down.
I loved this book! It has some seriously comical events, some that pull at your heart strings and some totally swoon-worthy. Highly recommend!
Funny, warm, touching, romantic, everything you want in a good romance. I always look forward to Ms. Walton’s books, I have them all.
I absolutely loved this book, it was indeed a joy to read. Hilariously laugh out loud funny at times and poignantly touching at others. My favorite Crystal Walton book so far.
A Western romance, this story is filled with both comedy and pathos, drawing the reader into the plot even as the book opens with Callie's nemesis, a rooster named Elvis. Callie has arrived at Sage Valley Dude Ranch with a view to gaining an "authentic" experience after being slated by a book critic. Based on one bad review her publisher is threatening to pull her books and Callie is licking her wounds. Even worse, her family consider her dreams of writing as frivolous and are putting pressure on her to return to the family fold to fulfill their aspirations for her. Fortunately, Callie has one good friend that believes in her, hence her visit to the dude ranch. Her first encounter with Reed does not go well, and nor do most of those that follow as Callie suddenly finds herself becoming uncoordinated and klutzy. However, having been given the task of shadowing Reed to understand what a country vet does with his days, Callie is determined to show her mettle. The fact that the vet's green eyes draw her in isn't too bad either. Reed is attracted to Callie, but he has a wealth of unresolved pain and sorrow to deal with. Trying not to deal with the real issues in his life, Reed has done his best to cut off his feelings and emotions, but Callie creeps into his heart and into the hearts of his children. He discovers the truth about Callie in an unexpected way and feelings of betrayal swamp him. It takes the machinations of determined friends to make both Callie and Reed see that love is worth fighting for. This book is part of a series but is nevertheless a standalone and comes to a good ending, whilst opening the way for the next book in the series. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
~4.5 stars~ Crystal Walton has a way of taking well-worn tropes and making them feel fresh and engaging, and that’s exactly what she’s done with this novella. Romance author lacking in “real life†romance experience? Yep, read that a few times lately. Father of two lost his beloved wife too soon and is wary of risking his heart again? Well, let’s just say there’s something about that scenario that really appeals to female romance readers. So in terms of broad story structure, are you going to find anything new here? Probably not, unless you’re really new to the romance genre.Where Crystal Walton draws me in time and again, though, is the combination of humour and heart in her writing and the characters you can’t help but want to spend time with. Take for example the psychotic rooster Elvis, who’s not exactly sure he wants to welcome Callie onto his turf. Or Callie’s straight-talking friend Tricia, who says it like it is: “You booked this vacation because a reviewer with his tighty-whities in a wad claimed your work lacked authenticity.†I seriously have to remember to use that expression sometime! And right alongside her fantastic secondary characters are main characters who feel as real as the ground beneath your feet. And yeah, I know a lot of reviewers say that about the characters they love, but these characters really are flesh and blood. I’m not sure there’s any better way to say it. The dialogue is natural and engaging—even better, the humour is natural and engaging, whether it’s situational comedy (hello, Elvis!), snappy one-liners, or anything in between. And the romance has that perfect blend of emotional depth and swoon factor. I’m a fan for life.I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.
4.5 stars! This is the first book by Crystal Walton I have read and it’s an excellent read! The story is well-written with quite a bit of humor, the dialogue is fantastic, the plot is intriguing, the characters are totally engaging and lovable, and the faith thread is believable and real. If you enjoy a good contemporary romance with heart-fluttering romance and heart-warming character growth, you will definitely enjoy this book.Callie, trying to pick up her shattered dream of a career as romance author, ends up at a dude ranch in Texas far from home. Callie is full of spunk, pluck, and gumption and also tender, compassionate, and hopelessly romantic. Reed, the small town vet, is loyal, steadfast, and swoon-worthy though he’s still trying to find peace after his wife’s death. His daughters are adorable as secondary characters in the story and his mother-in-law is quite a presence in the plot line. I’m looking forward to more books in the Sage Valley Ranch series!I received a copy of the book from the author and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
