This is a collection of behind the scenes essays Roy Thomas wrote about each issue of the CONAN THE BARBARIAN comic book he wrote and edited for Marvel. As Roy has the heart of a historian, there are lots of details about the creative and publishing decisions that led to Conan becoming one of Marvel's best-selling and most artistically mature titles of the 1970s. Lots of fascinating and informative anecdotes about Stan Lee, Barry Windsor-Smith, Gil Kane, John Buscema, Neal Adams and other giants of the comic book world.This volume covers through issue 51. With luck the next volume, covering 52-115 will be released soon.
I haven't even finished this yet, and I'm rating it 5 Stars. If you love comics, and love Conan, this is a must-read.It's a fascinating look into the world of Marvel Comics in the 70s. Granted, there may be a somewhat limited audience for that, but I'm firmly ensconced in that audience, and this reads wonderfully!Not only do you get to learn about the people behind the writing and drawing of our favorite Barbarian, you learn about how it all came about. From it's infancy to the firm establishment of his place in the Marvel history.I got it just in time to read along with my newly arrive Conan the Marvel Years Omnibus. They're a great 1-2 punch.I heartily recommend it!
Roy Thomas collects past articles he'd written on the process of publishing the Conan the barbarian comic. For comic fans it is interesting to learn some of the behind the scenes adjustments and/or politics in creating one of the best selling comics for the Marvel Universe. Being somewhat of a comic geek, I would like to have seen more illustrations used in the book besides just the black and white covers of the comic.
An interesting read in which Roy Thomas takes you on a journey through issue to issue of the Conan Marvel Comics series giving the reader insight into what went on with the creation of each and every one. Great history of the comic version of Conan but nothing more, and it delivers just what it promises.
Sorry to write this in the reviews, but Amazon isn't making it easy to report this issue with their options -- the chapter for "RED NAILS" is missing and the chapter for "THE MONSTER OF THE MONOLITHS" just repeats itself...Amazon, please correct this error! Thanks!
This is all about the behind the scenes thinking by the author of the Marvel comic from the 70's. If those comics were of interest (which they definitely were to me!), then this book is a great companion to them, with info not just on the genesis of the stories themselves, but often of the difficulties and frustrations inherent in magazine publishing. I loved it!
EXCELLENT BOOK! If you ever once while reading a conan comic in your youth wandered how did this story come to be? Well, wander no more. This book will cover that and much more. Excellent read, fasinating and just a all around great book!
